The use of leaded petrol has now been eradicated worldwide nearly a century after doctors first shared concerns of the toxicity of leaded fuel. However, in August, Algeria - the last country using leaded fuel - used up the last of its supplies. The United Nations have hailed this as a milestone landmark for global health and the environment.

Concerns were first raised in 1924, but it up until the 1970s most petrol sold all over the world contained lead. The UN launched a campaign to ban leaded fuel in 2002, by which time many economic leaders including the United States had already stopped the sale of leaded fuel. However, it took much longer to address the situation in low-income nations.
