Why is Petroleum a Fossil Fuel?

Petroleum Service Company

Petroleum is a 'fossil fuel' because it consists of hydrocarbons that were formed from the fossilized remains of plants and animals from millions of years ago. The extreme heat and pressure exerted on these hydrocarbons over millions of years turn them into petroleum. Some of the fossils even pre-date the dinosaurs!

Petroleum is one of 7 fossil fuels. The other fossil fuels include coal, natural gas, oil shales, bitumens, tar sands, and heavy oils.
